    No hay que confundir capitalismo con liberalismo. El capitalismo es una forma de sistema económico que puede adoptar versiones liberales o no liberales, con o sin intervención del Estado, con mayor o menor grado de regulación del mercado. El capitalismo en sí no es liberal; utiliza herramientas de mercado, en las que existe un libre intercambio, pero no de manera obligatoria, y dejando al Estado en su mínima expresión. Economías como la de China son hoy en día capitalistas, aunque con gobierno comunista. Es, sin duda, un tema de estudio, pero no se trata de un capitalismo de libre mercado, ya que, desde 1978, ha conseguido algo que el comunismo económico no podía logra que es sacar a la mayoría de la población de la pobreza extrema.

    Santo Tomás, en la Suma Teológica (Secunda Secundae, cuestión 77), dice: “Nadie debe vender a otro una cosa a mayor precio que su valor”. En la visión del teórico liberal Ludwig von Mises, los precios se configuran simplemente por el libre acuerdo. Si tú estás de acuerdo con el precio que otro te ofrece, basta con pactar libremente la venta y punto. No obstante, Santo Tomás no promueve ese tipo de intercambio subjetivo de mutuo acuerdo si el precio no corresponde con la realidad objetiva del valor, en donde se busca aprovechar la situación del momento para venderlo más barato o más caro. Porque uno podría manipular las percepciones para venderle a otro algo a un precio mayor, o venderle, en situación de necesidad, a un precio absurdo; e incluso obligar a otro a vender de manera deshonesta. Siempre te muestran como si el vendedor fuera el malo, pero existe un mundo de aprovechadores que, durante las crisis, fuerzan la venta para lucrar a bajo costo. Un ejemplo es la inmensa cantidad de propiedades que los Kirchner adquirieron con los préstamos otorgados en la provincia de Santa Cruz, tal como denuncia Álvaro de Lamadrid en su libro La Década Enterrada.

    Un claro ejemplo es la situación caótica que el kirchnerismo dejó en Argentina y la reacción de la derecha, que desesperadamente votó por Milei. Él se define como “un liberal libertario. Filosóficamente, soy un anarquista de mercado”, y tiene como valor supremo la libertad, como lo dijo en su discurso en Washington, D.C. Algo que, en principio, debería haberse visto como lamentable, pero que es exaltado como un gran logro por muchos católicos. Según la Iglesia Católica, la ideología liberal es nefasta.

    ¿Qué es ser liberal?

    En el mundo hispanoparlante, la primera vez que se recurrió al término “liberal” fue durante las sesiones de las Cortes de Cádiz, en 1812. La noción de libertad que debe tener un católico es muy diferente a la que posee un liberal. Por ejemplo, los liberales españoles Carlos Rodríguez Brown y Juan Ramón Rayo, en su libro titulado El liberalismo no es pecado: la economía en cinco lecciones (2011, p. 11), dicen: “Para el liberalismo, lo más importante es la libertad”.

    El economista católico Dante Urbina comenta: “El liberalismo es una ideología que tiene por esencia poner en la centralidad y la primacía a la libertad. Está entendida como libertad negativa e individual, es decir, como la no interferencia; como que uno haga lo que le dé la gana, que el Estado no se meta, siempre y cuando no se cause daño a nadie. Benegas Lynch, por ejemplo, al hablar del liberalismo —y que Milei tanto repite— dice que ‘el liberalismo no es más que el respeto irrestricto hacia el proyecto de vida del prójimo’. Por lo tanto, queda claro que, para los libertarios, lo más importante es la libertad.”

    Milei, en su primer discurso oficial, al citar a Benegas Lynch, consideró que su idea liberal era “la esencia del nuevo contrato social que eligieron los argentinos”. ¿Realmente los argentinos adherimos a eso? Los argentinos rechazaron el modelo socio‑comunista reinante en Argentina durante décadas —reflejado en su apoyo a los libertarios—, pero eso no significa que hayan aceptado, o deban aceptar, ciegamente su propuesta liberal.

    Porque, si tomamos la idea del “respeto irrestricto hacia el proyecto de vida del prójimo”, tendríamos que aceptar el aborto, como proponen ciertos liberales; la eutanasia, como proponen los ultra liberales; o caer en la contradicción de permitir el suicidio. Porque, o defiendes la vida o defiendes la libertad irrestricta.

    El Máster en desarrollo humano, Álvaro Fernández Teixeira Nunes, a ese respecto comenta: “La respuesta que históricamente ha dado el Derecho a esta cuestión es muy distinta a la de esta visión utilitarista y/o ultraliberal. En efecto, el límite objetivo a la libertad de matarnos y/o de pedir a otro que nos mate no es que estemos sanos, sino que somos personas poseedoras de una dignidad humana inalienable e irrenunciable. A diferencia del ganado —que se mata para consumo estando sano—, el ser humano mantiene inalterable su dignidad —ya sano, ya enfermo— por el solo hecho de ser persona”.

    Para un católico, además, la vida merece ser protegida por el hecho de que somos hijos de Dios, sometidos a su santa voluntad. Quitarse la vida es negar a Dios, y, por lo tanto, la idea de libertad irrestricta no tiene validez moral ni religiosa.

    Considero, por ejemplo, el caso de un hombre que ofrece algún beneficio a una mujer a cambio de sexo. El liberal Murray Rothbard sustenta el principio de autopropiedad, según el cual somos propietarios de nuestro propio cuerpo; en esa situación de intercambio de favores no se estaría violando el principio de propiedad, porque la mujer, propietaria de su cuerpo según Rothbard, podría libremente ofrecérselo a ese hombre, que es propietario de un beneficio que le interesa, y así se realiza la transacción. Pero eso es aberrante y va en contra de la decencia humana, si bien no contradice la ética minimalista del liberalismo.

    Quien no entienda que el liberalismo es la columna vertebral de casi todos los movimientos de derecha, izquierda y centro que han gobernado en Argentina, no comprende realmente lo que sucede en nuestro país y por qué está en la situación en que se encuentra. ¡Son todos lo mismo!

    Los católicos deberíamos exigir a los libertarios que recuperen los valores cristianos en las leyes, en las instituciones, en la economía, etc., o bien, ellos impondrán un yugo libertario peor que el kirchnerismo en Argentina.

    Un ejemplo claro de cómo funciona el capitalismo liberal es el carnaval. En Argentina, los días 2 y 3 de marzo fueron feriados para que la gente pudiera celebrar un carnaval, en el que todos saben que la lujuria, el sexo, el alcohol, las drogas, etc., pueden circular libremente, pues es el ambiente propio del libertinaje. Donde hay libertinaje, todo está permitido, mientras exista un mutuo acuerdo entre consumidores y prestadores de servicios. Si las drogas están prohibidas por ley, para el liberalismo es cuestión de tiempo quitar dicha prohibición en la medida en que el mercado lo demande… y así legalizar ese vicio que promueve un mercado tan redituable.

    Por el contrario, el 5 de marzo de 2025, miércoles de ceniza, en Argentina se impuso que había que trabajar, porque la virtud no es redituable. En esta ceremonia católica se promueve todo lo contrario a los ideales libertarios: la abstinencia, la penitencia, el rechazo a las pasiones desenfrenadas, el pedido de perdón por los excesos cometidos, etc. No hay nada más opuesto al liberalismo que la Semana Santa. Por lo tanto, buscarán cercenarla tanto como sea posible, para dar libre curso al comercio del vicio, que otorga mayores ganancias. Y así sucede con otras fiestas paganas como Halloween, las marchas LGBT que duran un mes completo, etc.

    Todo lo que incentive el vicio en un sistema liberal debe ser apadrinado, y todo lo que promueva la virtud, combatido.

    Por lo tanto, está claro que la corriente liberal es contraria a la Iglesia Católica, pues se opone diametralmente a sus intereses, favoreciendo el vicio, que vende más que la virtud.

    Por eso, la Iglesia Católica condena el liberalismo, y, a su vez, el liberalismo combate de todas las maneras posibles a la Iglesia Católica, porque existe una guerra social entre el vicio y la virtud.

    Queda claro que no es posible ser un católico liberal o que un liberal se diga católico; no son compatibles.

    Pmuchos liberales argumentan que no hay que mezclar política, economía y religión, que son ámbitos distintos y que, si alguien quiere religión, que vaya a la iglesia.

    Ludwig von Mises, teórico liberal, dice: “Los liberales nada tienen que oponer a las creencias religiosas, en tanto y en cuanto estas no interfieran en los asuntos sociales, políticos y económicos.”

    No obstante, Luis de Molina, de la Escuela de Salamanca, quien en su libro sobre la justicia y el derecho (1593, tratado 2, disposición 28, número 1) dice: “Cristo, en cuanto a Dios, es, por derecho de creación, Señor de todas las cosas.”

    Por lo tanto, Cristo sí tiene derecho a intervenir en la política, en la economía, y no solamente en los asuntos sociales. La religión no es sólo para el ámbito de la vida privada. Los católicos deberían opinar como católicos sobre economía y no como liberales. Esa no es una opción, y al hacerlo se colocan en una posición contraria a la Iglesia.

    ¿Qué es preferible: el comunismo más radical y ateo, que te quita la libertad y la propiedad privada, o el liberalismo, que promueve el vicio y la degradación moral, permitiendo la propiedad privada y el libertinaje? En este dilema se ha colocado a los argentinos desde hace décadas, y es evidente que ninguna de las dos opciones es aceptable.

    Lo que ha gobernado en Argentina desde las revoluciones de independencia, y en la gran mayoría de los países católicos, es el liberalismo, ya sea de derecha, de centro o de izquierda. Pero todos tienen ese denominador común que implica una marcha, más rápida o lenta, para imponer una revolución cultural, social y religiosa opuesta a la Iglesia Católica y, por lo tanto, a Dios nuestro Señor.

  • Monseñor Baseotto: Fe de errata

    Conversando con un feligrés de las misas de Mons Baseotto en Stella Maris me recordó que Andrés de Asboth había fallecido antes de 2002 y por lo tanto no llegó a conocerlas. Además es probable que la postura de la FSSPX sobre Baseotto no haya sido del P. Bouchacourt sino del P. Rubio.

    El caso es que durante muchos años hemos intentado que la autoridad eclesiástica de Buenos Aires autorice la celebración de la Misa de Siempre dentro de la diócesis. La postura de Andrés de Asboth a cada uno de esos intentos era que “cuantas más misas mejor”, aunque los sacerdotes que las celebraban no tuvieran las cosas tan claras como deberían. Andrés confiaba mucho en el efecto de apostolado que esas misas tienen tanto sobre el celebrante como sobre los feligreses.

    Sin querer mi memoria me falló y le atribuí a Andrés esa postura también respecto a las misas de Baseotto, lo cual es históricamente inexacto.

  • Murió Monseñor Antonio Baseotto

    Murió nuestro muy querido Monseñor Antonio Baseotto

    Conocí a Monseñor Baseotto en un acto por la Vida y la Familia en la plaza Rodríguez Peña hace más de veinte años. Él y Monseñor Charbel fueron los únicos obispos que respondieron a nuestra convocatoria. Por coincidencia ninguno de los dos tenía jurisdicción territorial. La juridicción de Mons. Baseotto se extendía a cualquier lugar adonde hubiera un miembro de las Fuerzas Armadas. Y la jurisdicción de Mons. Charbel se extendía a cualquier lugar adonde hubiera un libanés maronita. No acudieron a la convocatoria niguno de los cinco obispos con jurisdicción territorial sobre la ciudad de Buenos Aires (un arzobispo y cuatro vicarios obispos). Por lo que recuerdo el vicario zona Centro residía en la casa del Clero justo enfrente a la plaza (una vez pedí una audicencia y me atendió ahí). Pero no se acercó.

    Estando en la plaza me puse a conversar con él y quedé en ir a visitarlo a su catedral castrense “Stella Maris” para hablar de temas litúrgicos. A esa visita fuimos cuatro: Félix Dufourq, Luis Seligmann, Osvaldo Tévere (el único bajo la jurisdicción de Mons. por ser militar) y yo. Durante la entrevista Mons Baseotto explicó que él formaba parte de la Comisión de Liturgia de la Conferencia Episcopal Argentina y que en ese carácter estaba encargado de detectar y corregir los abusos litúrgicos. Para tener un parámetro objetivo de qué era un abuso litúrgico se puso a estudiar los misales anteriores a la reforma de 1968 y llegó a la conclusión que cuanto más una celebración litúrgica se alejara del rito tradicional había más riesgo de abuso. Y al revés, la misa era más piadosa cuanto más el rito moderno imitara al rito antiguo. Es decir que el rito tradicional era el “modelo” al cual había que acercarse, pero sin llegar nunca a tocarlo.

    Realmente me sorprendió el hallazgo de Mons Baseotto. La misa redactada por Bugnini en 1968 no quedaba muy bien parada en su análisis. Era como si alguien dijera que jamás confiaría su salud a un médico, pero sí a un enfermero que se parezca lo más posible a un médico. Hay algo esquizofrénico en la misa nueva “bien rezada”. Hay un rechazo a la misa tradicional pero al mismo tiempo un deseo de imitarla.

    Luego de esa entrevista Mons. Baseotto empezó a celebrar los domingos en su catedral la Misa con el Misal de 1962. Stella Maris se llenó de gente. Fue un éxito. Lamentablemente recibió críticas tanto del sector oficialista como del Padre Bouchacourt (FSSPX). Extraña coincidencia: ¡todos en contra de Baseotto! La postura de la FSSPX no fue compartida por el Dr Andrés de Asboth, quien fue uno de los primeros en apoyar a Monseñor Lefebvre en Argentina y sin embargo siguió yendo a las misas de Mons Baseotto.

    En febrero 2005 estalló el hipócrita escándalo de Néstor Kirchner contra Monseñor Baseotto, por citar la condena que hizo el mismísimo Nuestro Señor Jesucristo contra quienes pervertían a los niños en las escuelas, máxime si utilizan el poder estatal. Monseñor Baseotto perdió su diócesis por imposición del Gobierno. El único obispo argentino que se solidarizó con él fue el de Quilmes. Y el Cardenal Ratzinger desde Roma. El silencio del Cardenal Bergoglio fue estrepitoso.

    Ya sin tareas pastorales Monseñor Baseotto se dedicó de lleno a defender la Vida y la Familia para lo cual fundó un “Foro” cuyo objeto era reunir los esfuerzos dispersos de tantos grupos pro-vida. Las reuniones del Foro se realizaban en el salón parroquial de Las Victorias, al que Monseñor tenía acceso en su calidad de Redentorista. De nuevo, al inicio el éxito fue rotundo. El salón se llenaba y rebalsaba. No faltó nadie del ambiente “pro-vida”. Pero como suele suceder, los grupos tienen un problema que llamo de “matemáticas” porque cada uno piensa que “hay que sumar” significa “que todos se sumen a mí”. Es curioso cómo muchos que deploran la dispersión de los esfuerzos están poco interesados en someter los suyos a la dirección de otro jefe. El resultado es que el Foro se fue desintegrando. Monseñor viajó a Roma, se entrevistó con el Papa (a esa altura ya era Benedicto XVI), le pidió que rece por el Foro y que ponga su firma en una bendición especial. Esa bendición debidamente puesta en un lindo marco presidió las reuniones del Foro mientras seguía su desintegración. La Corporación de Abogados Católicos, como miembro fundador (y liquidador) del “Foro de la Vida y la Familia de Monseñor Baseotto” se quedó con ese cuadro, que tenemos colgado en la sede de la Avenida Santa Fe 1206 1° A.

    Monseñor no se quedó quieto por haber perdido su Diócesis y su Foro. Siguió “rezando y trabajando”, como dijo el padre José Vogt (redentorista) hablando sobre Luis Baseotto (también redentorista), que murió en esos años. Luis y Antonio dedicaron su vida a “rezar y trabajar”. Imposible mejor elogio.

    De esos trabajos posteriores destaco el apoyo a la Preregrinación Nuestra Señora de Cristiandad. Gracias a su calidad de obispo no se le podía prohibir que celebrara con el Misal 1962 en la propia Basílica de Luján. Luego que Monseñor, por su enfermedad, dejó celebrar la misa de cierre de la peregrinación cayó la proscripción, como sucedió en Covadonga y como aparentemente está por suceder en Chartres. Las misas ahora se celebran en el corral de caballos de una peña criolla.

    Tuve el honor de que Monseñor Baseotto casara a mi hija María de la Cruz, con rito matrimonial antiguo y Misa San Pio V, en la Basílica del Santísimo Sacramento y que bautizara a mi nieto Esteban.
